About the Artist
In 1980, I was walking down Bond Street in London and saw a picture of a sailing ship in Green's window. Having loved, studied and built models of sailing ships all my life, I felt inspired to try my hand at painting. So, I went out and bought a canvas, oil paints and some brushes and set to work. `Three years later I was Chairman of a corporate Art Club, a friend of the RSMA , showing pictures in Art exhibitions of which Terrence Cuneo was chairman, and selling a few paintings when could bear to part with them! I also built two further 18th century war ships from the wood of a Queen Anne oak tree. There were certain ships and scenes which I wished to paint, including two of Captain Cook's "Endeavour" off New Zealand (where I was born) and Amundsun's "Gjoa" on the NW Passage, plus several from Gustaf Errickson's fleet of 4-masted grain ships coming up the Atlantic. In two paintings, I was surprised to find satisfaction at once - before I had hardly started - and from this I learnt to discipline myself to stop when it felt right.
